Exhibition Information

In 2000, I began my studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, in Halifax. Throughout my studies, I completed courses in printmaking, video, and drawing, but my focus was painting. After refining my oil painting techniques, I began experimenting with different mediums. I created many landscapes and figurative works with a combination of materials, including gel mediums, paper, resin, tar and wax.

I was drawn to the physical properties and numerous ways of manipulating wax and began a thorough investigation of encaustic painting (oil paint or pigment suspended in wax). The accumulative process of layering translucent material and the reductive process of carving into the wax appealed to me, as I was able to establish a relationship with my work that I was unable to achieve simply with oil paint.

The subject matter of my work varies, from abstract, rugged apocalyptic spaces, to geometric urban landscapes and fleshy figures built up from multiple layers of material. Currently I am working on a series of encaustic “city–scapes” based in and around Toronto that are investigations in colour and form and the interesting layered architecture.

I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004. Since then, I have continued to paint in my studio in Kingston, while studying one of my other interests, computers. I have participated in several group shows in Halifax, have shown my work at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and have had my paintings displayed at commercial establishments.
