Jason Curtis Newsted was born on March 4, 1963, in Battle Creek, MI but currently resides in Alamo, California. He is known for being the second recording bass guitarist with the band Metallica from October 1986 until his departure in January 2001. Newsted may not have been an original member of Metallica, but he was present for the band's rise from the metal underground to the top of the charts worldwide from the late-'80s up to the dawn of the 21st century. He recorded multiple albums that won six Grammy awards, sold 100 million units, and earned his 2009 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On October 23, 2006, Newsted was injured while attempting to catch a falling bass amp head (which later according to him was the bass amp that was used to record The Black Album, Load, and Reload.) The accident resulted in a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and biceps tear in the right. During this time he was unable to play, Jason Newsted decided to put down his instrument and pick up a brush. It was during this time that he began to express himself through painting. Since then, he’s become an accomplished modern artist.
Newsted’s trademark style includes mixing soil—from wherever he happens to be painting—into his acrylics, creating a highly dramatic effect. Newsted found solace through painting and since has turned out a number of large original works of art over the last half a decade. His first gallery show opened on May 4, 2010 at Micaëla Gallery in San Francisco.
Newsted says that he went "from making crazy and colorful music to making crazy and colorful paintings."
