Artist
Jeff Pykerman was born in Ontario, Canada in 1949. He
was strongly influenced at an early age by the surrounding
northern landscape which resulted in his first series
of watercolours depicting the magical world of fantastic
forest creatures. These works were shown in a solo exhibition
in Toronto in 1978. The complete collection was purchased
by Harlequin Publishing Company and donated to Ronald
McDonald House in Toronto where they are still on permanent
exhibit. Shortly thereafter, one of his watercolours
was selected for a tour of Japan, where the painting
won a Juror's award.
Pykerman began his artistic studies at Confederation
College in Thunder Bay, Ontario where he specialized
in film and animation. The endeavour proved to be an
invaluable future contributor to the artist's style,
composition, lighting and form. Over the following six
years, Pykerman lived in Victoria, British Columbia
and Thunder Bay, Ontario where he studied figure drawing,
painting, etching and art history at the University
of Victoria and Lakehead University. When he later settled
in Toronto, Pykerman continued his studies at the Toronto
School of Art.
His quest for further art exposure led him to Paris
and London. His experience in Europe resulted in the
evolution of his style into neo-expressionistic acrylic
canvases, with a figurative emphasis. Eventually, his
use of rich, saturated colour and form could no longer
be contained on a two-dimensional canvas. His work went
through a metamorphosis which gave birth to the non-
conventionally shaped relief vignettes seen today, each
with its own flow and abstract rhythm.
Relying on his own internal vision, Pykerman's images
come strictly from within. His inspiration relies on
daily life in the downtown core of Toronto, where he
keenly observes his fellow city dwellers. In them he
sees a complete array of emotions from gnawing angst
to unbridled joy.
