Stephen Roach was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1951
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sydney University in 1972 and after worked at various jobs in photography and teaching, and eventually became the director of the Australian Centre for Photography Workshop. He started exhibiting his photographs in 1978 and the following year left Australia to live in Japan, where he travelled and exhibited. From there he moved to France where he was given an Australia Arts Council studio in the south. He was then offered a studio in Amsterdam for a year and after this he eventually moved to Italy in 1982, where he has lived since. While living in Europe he continued to exhibit in the different countries he lived in and has since travelled extensively in Asia and America and exhibits in Europe, Asia, Australia and north America.
Stephen lives in Tuscany in an isolated farm house. He has a wife and two daughters and endless guests!
